Construction Cont'd

I have to begin this post with the fun stuff! Our little man is growing up! He's a full-fledged toddler, that is for sure! He is having a difficult time with "no," though we've noticed a nice difference in the past several weeks, praise the Lord! He screams at random times...for instance, we visited the Kinlaw Library yesterday at the College and some friends. Our dear friend, Sue, was keeping him occupied and he let out a long bloodcurdling scream to express his dislike at what she was doing - tickling and playing keep away with him. Yes, this toddler is not shy. He's a happy boy, as you can see in most of his pictures. But, he's beginning to throw a tantrum or two and stomp his feet in protest to our parenting. Keep it up, man! We are up for the challenge! And, the joys! Parenthood, whew...it's the best of times and the worst of times!

Get ready for...

The foot. It's a regular visitor on the arm of the highchair.
And, he has 16+ teeth now! He's been working hard. Wait, we've all been working hard!

Now on to the title of this post...

First floor is finished

Second floor goes up

Porch is going in - our builder, Mark, (on right) has become a friend and has helped us with so many small finishing projects around the house. The opening that Charley, John, and Mark are standing in is the front door/french doors.

The Amazing Cucumber

This information was in The New York Times several weeks ago as part of their "Spotlight on the Home" series that highlighted creative and fanciful ways to solve common problems.

1. Cucumbers contain most of the vitamins you need every day, just one cucumber contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and Zinc.

2. Feeling tired in the afternoon, put down the caffeinated soda and pick up a cucumber. Cucumbers are a good source of B Vitamins and Carbohydrates that can provide that quick pick-me-up that can last for hours.

3. Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower? Try rubbing a cucumber slice along the mirror, it will eliminate the fog and provide a soothing, spa-like fragrance.

4. Are grubs and slugs ruining your planting beds? Place a few slices in a small pie tin and your garden will be free of pests all season long. The chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminum to give off a scent undetectable to humans but drive garden pests crazy and make them flee the area.

5. Looking for a fast and easy way to remove cellulite before going out or to the pool? Try rubbing a slice or two of cucumbers along your problem area for a few minutes, the phytochemicals in the cucumber cause the collagen in your skin to tighten, firming up the outer layer and reducing the visibility of cellulite. Works great on wrinkles too!!!

6. Want to avoid a hangover or terrible headache? Eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed and wake up refreshed and headache free. Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish essential nutrients the body lost, keeping everything in equilibrium, avoiding both a hangover and headache!!

7. Looking to fight off that afternoon or evening snacking binge? Cucumbers have been used for centuries and often used by European trappers, traders and explorers for quick meals to thwart off starvation.

8. Have an important meeting or job interview and you realize that you don't have enough time to polish your shoes? Rub a freshly cut cucumber over the shoe, its chemicals will provide a quick and durable shine that not only looks great but also repels water.

9. Out of WD 40 and need to fix a squeaky hinge? Take a cucumber slice and rub it along the problematic hinge, and voila, the squeak is gone!

10. Stressed out and don't have time for massage, facial or visit to the spa? Cut up an entire cucumber and place it in a boiling pot of water, the chemicals and nutrients from the cucumber will react with the boiling water and be released in the steam, creating a soothing, relaxing aroma that has been shown to reduce stress in new mothers and college students during final exams.

11. Just finish a business lunch and realize you don't have gum or mints? Take a slice of cucumber and press it to the roof of your mouth with your tongue for 30 seconds to eliminate bad breath, the phytochemcials will kill the bacteria in your mouth responsible for causing bad breath.

12. Looking for a 'green' way to clean your faucets, sinks or stainless steel? Take a slice of cucumber and rub it on the surface you want to clean, not only will it remove years of tarnish and bring back the shine, but it won't leave streaks and won't harm your fingers or fingernails while you clean.

13. Using a pen and made a mistake? Take the outside of the cucumber and slowly use it to erase the pen writing, also works great on crayons and markers that the kids have used to decorate the walls!!

Don't know if all of these work! Haven't tried these tips, but what could be better than a straight-from-the-earth solution to many of life's woes! If you try something, let me know how it works for you! ~J

Sesame, a shock, and sarcasm

Ok. Ok. Clearly, Lisa is the only sane one in the bunch. Sesame Street names are mommy's first preference as of 10 o'clock on Thursday morning. (By the way, did anyone notice that I said "happy Wednesday" on Tuesday's post!? Yikes.)

This post will be short as the 'rents are AGAIN coming into town. They are abusing their priviledges. I had no idea what retirement would do to/for them. But, it's evident they take great delight in traveling and particularly to see their grandson. With Charley working a lot I am thankful for them!

Gotta clean, clean, clean. The house has sorely lacked my touch for the past several days b/c all I can do is moan and groan while I nurse my weeping eyes, running nose and clogged head thanks to the ragweed and whatever else is lurking around outside.

Does anyone have the Sprout channel on their tv? It's nice. And, I like it a lot for John - we keep it on for company sometimes. But, I will be glad when, what I consider, the cheese of this period of my life is over. I try so hard to hold my sarcasm in around John b/c I've heard it's not all that healthy for babies :) If only an adult were around when the monster strikes me...
And, don't get me started on Barney.

Oh, I haven't told you what happened to me the other day! John and I decided to take a walk as we waited for our neighbor and the hens. John was strapped in his hiking backpack on my back. As I reached for the electric fence handle to open the gate I put my hand on the t-post that the gate is attached to...and, you guessed it, I got the shock of my life, literally. It was so powerful it took my breath away. I coughed and sputtered and then was as mad as a hornet. Thankfully John didn't feel a thing. He started mimicking my cough as soon as the crisis was over, though. It was kinda funny. I have learned my lesson...I won't ever hold on to the post as I open the gate again. I might refrain from opening the gate for the next several days. Yes, that's the best idea.

Today, Cookie Monster will be driving the chicken tractor and Bert will be his co-pilot.
